JKA ROWVILLE
JKA Rowville dojo opened in 2011. During the past 14 years we have seen 20 students achieve various black belts. Below is a group photo from 2016.
Over the years Rowville students have achieved a lot. They have excelled at their gradings, attended many seminars, competitions and represented Australia overseas and nationally. They have won many championships but more importantly they have simply had fun growing in the karate way.
JKA Rowville is a very family oriented dojo showing care and respect for all our students regardless of age.

About Us
Toni Coates
I started karate 40 years ago, at the River Karate Club with Sensei Andrew Holmes, British and Commonwealth Champion. Followed by Sensei Yasuo Sakurai, 7th Dan, a member of the JKA “Shihankai” since 2008. He was my chief instructor since yellow belt who remains a trusted and dear friend. Don Sharp Sensei, Canadian National and Open Champion, 1996 JKA World Kumite Champion. Over the years I have had the privilege of training with several world class instructors. I now train with Jason Naylor Sensei, chief instructor and technical director JKA/WF Australia, my mentor and karate instructor.
My favourite thing about karate is watching students develop self confidence, self esteem and discipline. During the past 14 years, I have seen over 20 students achieve their black belts.

I started karate in 2014, when I was 9 years old after my Aunt purchased a silent auction gift which consisted of 3 months training. Ever since I began I was captivated by the lifestyle and the friendships I’ve made along the way. Outside of karate I work with kids which is a huge passion of mine, what I love about karate is teaching and passing on my skills. I have won silver and gold in both state and national competitions. I also recently competed at the World Championships in Japan and made it to the semi-finals in kata.

I started karate in 2022 after seeing my children having so much fun training and competing. What began as a shared experience quickly became a passion of my own. I’m grateful to be part of a respectful and family-friendly dojo, surrounded by supportive and technically excellent instructors.
I love training deep stances and refining my technique, as they build strength, balance, and agility. Karate has also improved my focus, discipline, and overall fitness, making every session both challenging and rewarding. It’s a lifelong journey, and I’m excited for what’s to come.
